Firefighters Progress Against Blewett Fire

Firefighters made progress against the Blewett Fire on Monday, slowing its spread and protecting structures. The fire has burned 13,215 acres and is now 40% contained, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).

Crews worked throughout the day to build fire lines and protect homes and businesses. They were assisted by aircraft, which dropped water and fire retardant on the flames.

The fire is burning in timber and brush, and has been fueled by hot, dry weather. Firefighters are facing challenges due to the steep terrain and limited access to water.

US Highway 97 was closed overnight between milepost 147 near Sunriver and milepost 182 near La Pine due to the fire.

The highway reopened on Tuesday morning, but drivers are advised to be aware of fire activity and follow the directions of law enforcement.
